Some fad diets, all on their own, have the ability to cause harmful changes to the body, or even organ damage, without adding in the aspect of dietary supplements, some of which haven’t been approved by the U.S. regulatory agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), making them risky and potentially dangerous to one’s health.

One of the most popular dietary supplements that is used to promote weight loss is ephedra, an ingredient that’s long been under the microscope due to several claims of severe medical and mental health complications, even a number of fatalities. Although the companies who manufacture dietary supplements containing ephedra, also known as ephedrine or ma huang, continue to insist that their products are safe when taken exactly as recommended, there are no regulations in place regarding the dosage recommendations or the distribution of this rather questionable ingredient.

Square one. Stop thinking about diet, diets, dieting, on a diet, fad diet, latest diet, celebrity diet, diet pills, diet plans, diet programs…ad nauseum…literally!

A diet is simply what you eat! Your diet can consist of chocolate donuts or alfalfa sprouts, but most “Diets”, with a capital “D” will not set you free. Instead, they lock you in a cage. Eat anything other than what they prescribe, and you are a failure…at least, so reads their literature.

What about all this news on Acai berry juice diet and the banana diet etc. Well I’ll expose these two diets for what they really are and answer once and for all will you really lose weight, or are they just fad diets.

The Acai Berry Juice Diet: Oprah made a big fuss over acai berries and the diet involved with them a little while ago. The reality is that Acai juice alone is not enough to lose any significant or even minor amounts of weight. On top of that Acai juice is very expensive and arguably overpriced right now because of all the hype. The key to this diet is the fiber shake, but if that’s whats doing it then why not do a real cleanse and lose up to 10x more weight!

Dieting is not necessarily the same process for all people. What works great for one person may not work quite as well for another. That being true, there are still a lot of generalities pertaining to weight loss that are pretty universal and that are guaranteed to work every time to produce health through proper weight loss, diet and nutrition. It just may work to a different degree on one person than the next. Yes, dieting is very complex, and there are many components of a diet that interact with each other that when done properly, will achieve the maximum benefit.

The two most important aspect of a weight loss program are the foods you eat and their associated caloric values, nutritional benefits, and of course, some sort of exercise. No matter what you have heard or read, no diet can work long term without exercise. Without some way of increasing our metabolism, there is no way that our bodies are going to burn enough calories to lose weight and maintain health. Starving yourself for extended periods of time is not dieting and is not the way to go about proper weight loss, diet and nutrition. There must be balance in order for proper weight loss, diet and nutrition to work together to achieve a desired goal.
